...What spurred all this speculation about the peculiarities of California in general and the Sierra Club in particular was a Los Angeles Times story I saw a few weeks ago about a terrific battle being waged within the Sierra Club.
The battle is between members who either favor immigration or who are neutral on the matter and those who are dead set against it. The foes of immigration are not against immigrants per se. What they're really opposed to is uncontrolled population growth. The immigration foes are farsighted enough to realize that unless we control our population, the environment will continue to degrade no matter how hard we try to protect it. The folks on the other side are too dimwitted to grasp that fact.
Sierra Club board member Benjamin Zuckerman expressed my sentiments exactly when he said: "Everything else the Sierra Club is doing is doomed to fail if the United States continues on its rapid population growth...
Zuckerman may be on the right track, but a great many environmentalists within and without the Sierra Club don't share his acumen. Until they and a lot of other Americans wake up, trying to save the environment is an exercise in futility...
