Note
* Web site author's note: The following letter has been included here as
requested by Lisa Force, Marcia Hanscom and Karyn Strickler. The Sierra Democracy definition of "reform oriented" is consistent with theirs- i.e. it means standing for stronger environmental protection and less compromising along with fair and open debate and elections for all issues.
Dear Sierra Club Members,
All of the candidates for the 2004 Sierra Club Board of Directors elections and incumbent Directors are listed on the Sierra Democracy website. Lisa Force is listed as an "independent, grassroots reform-oriented" director. Karyn Strickler is listed under "reform-oriented," candidates.
We would like to clarify that we did not authorize the classification of "reform-oriented," since we don't know how the authors of the website themselves define the term. We are writing to clarify that the classifications are appropriate if they mean that we do not support the perpetuation of the status quo. We both stand for stronger environmental protection and less compromise than the existing state of affairs.
We would also like to clarify that we are not affiliated with SUSPS or the use of immigration restrictions for population stabilization. We want to be sure that the distinction is clear.
We support continued Club neutrality on the immigration issue and believe our focus must be on direct assaults to the environment posed mostly by industry. We will support open debate on the immigration issue in accord with the Club's democratic traditions. Please feel free to contact us for further information on our positions on immigration and population issues.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Lisa Force
